Dr William Tan personifies both passion and compassion. Stricken with polio at the age of two and paralysed from the waist down, he overcame early educational setbacks to rise from kindergarten drop-out to top student at Selegie Primary School, and later Raffles Institution on a Ministry of Education scholarship.

He graduated from the National University of Singapore with a major in Life Sciences and began his career in the Civil Service. Driven by a desire to become both scientist and physician, he pursued further studies abroad, earning First Class Honours in Physiology and becoming a Harvard Fulbright Scholar and Oxford Chevening Scholar, with training at the Mayo Clinic.

In 1987, Dr Tan reframed success as service, dedicating his life to fundraising and advocacy for vulnerable communities worldwide. He has since raised over USD 18 million for charitable causes across more than 10 countries through endurance challenges and extreme sporting feats.

His endurance achievements include wheelchair pushes and ultramarathons across continents, as well as fundraising expeditions in New Zealand, Australia, Europe, the UK, and the United States. These efforts have supported causes such as polio eradication, cancer care, and children’s health initiatives.

In 2007, he became the first person to complete a wheelchair marathon at the North Pole, and later that year set a world record completing 7 marathons across 7 continents in under 27 days, raising funds for international charities.

In 2009, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 leukemia, yet continued to turn adversity into purpose, even during treatment. His experience deepened his advocacy for cancer patients and strengthened his commitment to humanitarian work.

Despite his condition, he returned to competitive sport, including handcycling and wheelchair racing, representing Singapore at major international events and completing endurance challenges such as London–Paris rides and the Pyongyang Marathon.

Dr Tan has received numerous national and international honours, including the Singapore Youth Award, Commonwealth Youth Award, Public Service Star, and recognition from Queen Elizabeth II. Today, he continues to inspire global audiences as a speaker on resilience, purpose, and overcoming adversity.

In 2018, he was awarded the Commonwealth Points of Light Award by Queen Elizabeth II. He has also been named among Singapore’s most trusted individuals and continues to be globally recognised for his humanitarian impact.
